From Fad to Fact: Evaluating the Impact of Emerging Diets on Cardiovascular Health

The rise of the internet and social media has resulted in an overwhelming amount of information about health and nutrition. This has created confusion for both healthcare providers and the general public, leaving many questioning what constitutes a scientifically validated, evidence-based diet as opposed to a fleeting fad promoted by influencers.

Popular Diets and Cardiovascular Impact

Two of the most popular diets in recent years are the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting. Both diets aim to induce fat-burning (lipolysis), which may provide cardiovascular benefits. However, intermittent fasting appears to be a safer option compared to the ketogenic diet, as it is less likely to cause hyper-lipidaemia. This condition is characterised by high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood.

Although these diets are typically promoted for weight loss, their potential cardiovascular benefits depend on adherence to principles consistent with established “heart-healthy” diets. A comparison of these emerging diets with proven dietary patterns, such as the Mediterranean, plant-based, and DASH diets, highlights both their promise and limitations.

What Does the Research Say?

A recent review of the ketogenic and intermittent fasting diets found they may reduce cardiovascular risk factors. However, more controlled and longer-term studies are required to fully understand their effectiveness in reducing the impact of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. There is also a need for further clarity regarding their safety and efficacy across various populations. The well-established Mediterranean diet, plant-based diet, and DASH diet remain the gold standards for cardiovascular health. These diets focus on whole foods, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and minimising processed foods, which contribute to improved heart health.
