Maori Communities
Delivering cardiovascular health screening to underserved Maori communities in New Zealand.
The Challenge
Maori communities in New Zealand experience disproportionately higher rates of cardiovascular disease compared to the general population. Access to specialist cardiovascular assessment has historically been limited, particularly in rural and lower socioeconomic areas.
The Approach
CardiAction partnered with local health providers to bring ProScreen heart and artery health screenings directly into community settings. Screenings were conducted at marae, community health centres, and local pharmacies, removing barriers to access.
The Impact
Screening data revealed significant findings among participants, with many individuals identified as having elevated central haemodynamic parameters despite presenting with normal brachial blood pressure. These individuals received personalised action plans and, where appropriate, were referred to their GP for further assessment. Community feedback rated the programme 9 out of 10 for engagement and satisfaction.
